OpenCourseWorld

FAQ

What is OpenCourseWorld?

OpenCourseWorld is IMC's MOOC platform. The platform is based on IMC's established LMS technology and has been available since the end of 2012. The first two MOOCs were launched in January 2013 and were published in cooperation with the University of the Saarland, the Technical University of Munich and the University of Hamburg-Harburg under the titles 'Leadership' and 'Business Process Management'. Contributors to the courses, besides Prof. August-Wilhelm Scheer himself, include Prof. Christoph Igel of the DFKI and Prof. Helmut Krcmar of the Center for Digital Technology and Management in Munich.

What is a MOOC?

A MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) is a free online course which goes beyond conventional online training and is accessible to anyone. A MOOC is structured in the same way as lectures or seminars at universities. There is a start and end date as well as individual course modules which include content such as video lectures, e-learning, game-based learning, reports, homework and tests. The courses are conveniently self-paced so participants can decide for themselves when to complete the requirements and in which order.

Who is permitted to enrol for the courses?

Anyone can register to participate, regardless of his/her education, grade point average, age, nationality or organisational affiliation. There are no access restrictions.

I missed the start date of the course, can I still book and finish the course?

Yes. Although the module structure recommends that you complete each module within the suggested timeframe, you are free to decide for yourself when you want to complete each module and therefore you can still enrol for the course after the official start date. For specific courses, we close the enrolment, once the standard pacing of the course has reached its final module. However, for others, there is no recommended timeframe and you can enrol whenever you like.

Unfortunately I missed a course that I was interested in. Do you offer this course again?

In general, we relaunch our date-dependent courses in a self-paced-mode. If this is the case, you will find the respective course as a prior notice in the 'all courses' section.

Are the OpenCourseWorld MOOCs completely free of charge?

Almost. You can use the platform, book most of the courses and complete it at no cost. However, if you would like to request a certificate after the successful completion of the course, in general we will charge you € 95, - or € 45 for students (evidence of study required). In case of other conditions the information will be specified in the course directly.

Is it possible to get a certificate for each course?

That depends. Courses with the possibility to get certificates are marked appropriate on the course detail page. More information about purchasing certificates, requirements and costs are given directly in the respective course.

Is it possible to cancel a course?

Yes. You can cancel each course directly on the overview page 'My Courses'. But please keep in mind that you can neither undo the cancellation by yourself nor rebook the course on the page 'All courses'. In such cases please consult info@opencourseworld.de and we will help you out.

Can I use OpenCourseWorld on my mobile device?

Yes. The course content can be accessed by mobile devices and tablets as well as conventional PCs. The design of the platform is responsive which means it automatically adjusts to the appropriate display screen.

Will there be further technical developments on the platform?

Yes. The platform is constantly being updated with new features in an effort to continuously enhance the users' learning experience.

What types of content can I find on OpenCourseWorld?

Each MOOC on OpenCourseWorld offers various types of content which could include video lectures, documents with lecture slides and scripts, case studies, practical exercises, animated web-based trainings and automated tests in multiple-choice or single-choice formats.

What services does OpenCourseWorld offer to training providers?

OpenCourseWorld not only provides the hosting platform, but also offers a content creation service. If required, learning content can be created for external course partners for a fee. For those who want to operate their own MOOC platform with its own branding, IMC offers the platform technology for sale.
